Clinical Trial Diversity and Inclusion Lead

£46,500 to £50,250 per year

Permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week)

Hybrid working between home and our London Bridge Office with some travel to other locations

What the job involves

You’ll lead our work to make clinical research more inclusive, increasing the participation of underrepresented communities - initially with a strong focus on recruiting Black men to the TRANSFORM Trial.

You will:

  • develop and implement evidence-led strategies to improve representation, recruitment and participation in our funded trials and research studies
  • act as our subject matter expert on equitable trial recruitment, embedding equity into research planning and delivery
  • work with trial leads, Black clinicians, community organisations and advocacy groups to understand barriers, build trust and improve participation
  • design and support practical interventions that increase awareness, acceptance of invitations and recruitment of eligible Black men
  • establish clear measures and reporting processes, using recruitment and engagement data to recommend corrective action
  • build lasting capability through training, knowledge sharing, change management and strategic partnerships with research institutions
  • represent Prostate Cancer UK externally as a trusted voice on diversity and inclusion in clinical research

What we want from you

You’ll bring a strong understanding of inclusive patient engagement and the credibility to influence researchers, trial leads and community partners. We’re looking for someone who has:

  • a strong understanding of the UK healthcare system and patient pathways, and how these shape inclusive clinical trial design, recruitment and delivery
  • an understanding of the history of racism in research and how it continues to affect trust and participation among Black communities
  • experience in patient engagement or patient recruitment, particularly with underrepresented groups
  • strong stakeholder-management and influencing skills, including experience working with senior researchers, trial leads and external partners
  • clear, confident written and verbal communication skills, with the cultural humility to engage diverse audiences and build trust
  • the drive to identify opportunities, use initiative, solve problems and deliver work to a high standard
  • a collaborative and flexible approach, with a clear commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and allyship

Experience of clinical research or clinical trial recruitment, and a degree in a scientific discipline, would be helpful but are not essential.

For your supporting statement, please address the six points in ‘How to apply’, rather than responding to each bullet in this section.

Our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

At Prostate Cancer UK we’re committed to righting health inequalities across the UK, starting with those faced by Black men. This includes ground-breaking research into Black men's risk and working with communities directly to overcome barriers to the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. To make this happen, we're dedicated to being an inclusive, proactive organisation, as we strive to be Allies to Black communities. We’ll achieve this by advocating and working alongside those communities to promote change. We're also working to be Allies to each other, not only protected groups. In 2024, we launched our New Allyship Training Programme. All colleagues at Prostate Cancer UK will be trained to act and identify as an Ally.

We've also signed Business in the Community’s Race at Work Charter, as a dedication to our Black health equity work and wider EDI priorities. As a signatory, we're responsible and accountable for driving positive change.

Our people networks

We’re continuously learning more about the needs of our colleagues, and have three amazing People Networks, sponsored by our Leadership team:

  • Pride – A safe space where LGBTQ+ colleagues – and our allies – can share their diverse lived experiences, celebrate LGBTQ+ culture and history, and create new ideas about how our organisation can be more inclusive and representative of LGBTQ+ people
  • Mind and Body – Here to increase awareness, promote wellbeing and support colleagues affected by neurodiversity, mental health problems, disability and long-term illness
  • Culture Club – Here to increase awareness and celebrate the different cultures and beliefs that we have in the organisation, so that we all have our cultures felt and feel welcomed

How and where we work

Colleagues attend the office at least four days per month (pro rata for part-time colleagues) to collaborate, build relationships, and support projects and decision-making. You can choose where to work the rest of the time. Travel to the office is a commute, so we pay our own travel costs.

Additional in-person attendance will be required during your first few months for induction and training, to support you to learn the role and get to know colleagues.

We trust colleagues to work flexibly while balancing personal commitments with the needs of the charity, and we are committed to making reasonable adjustments for colleagues with a disability, neurodiversity, or a long-term physical or mental health condition.
